red hook . gowanus . brooklyn . new york

i photographed red hook and gowanus areas of brooklyn in 2004, because that's where i lived then. i do not photograph new york at random, i document where i live. i photograph what i know, what has meaning to me. i used to live at the corner of court street and west 9th street between 2003 and 2005. i also had a yashica twin lens on it's last leg. this would be its last project before being shelved. i had shot hundreds of rolls of film with it since i had bought it new in 1988. i was very comfortable with it and i wanted to photograph the neighborhood before it changed. just by looking around, you could tell things could not stay the way they were: broken buildings and empty lots are a transition phase in new york. things change fast, i walked around the streets for about a year. well, i rode my bike mostly, a curious tourist in my own town. then i moved to a different neighborhood...

j'ai photographié les quartiers de red hook et gowanus à brooklyn en 2004, parce que c'était là où j'habitais. je ne photographie pas new york au hazard, je documente là où j'habite. je photographie ce que je connais, ce qui me dit quelque chose. j'habitais au coin des rues court street et west 9 entre 2003 et 2005. j'avais aussi un yashica à double objectif mal en point. ce serait son dernier projet avant de le mettre sur étagère. j'y avais mis des centaines de rouleaux de pellicule depuis que je l'avais acheté neuf en 1988. je me sentais à l'aise avec cet appareil, et je voulais photographier le quartier avant qu'il ne change. en regardant autour de soi, il était évident que les choses ne pouvaient pas durer telles qu'elles: immeubles cassés et terrains vagues montrent une phase de transition à new york. les choses changent vite, j'ai marché au grès des rues pendant à peu près un an. enfin, sur mon vélo surtout, comme un touriste curieux dans ma propre ville. et puis ensuite j'ai déménagé dans un quartier différent...
